STEAM Summer Workshop 2019

As a member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. I get the opportunity to participate in multiple community service events throughout the year. One of my favorites is the STEAM summer workshop hosted by the Tau Mu Omega chapter. During the summer of 2019, I led an activity where students explored magnetism and magnetic fields by creating Magnetic Slime! The students (and ok, me too) really enjoyed getting our hands messy and watching as the slime seemed to come alive as it slowly moved towards the magnets.

(2012-For Life)

While at Michigan Tech, I had the opportunity to be a member of the Mind Trekkers STEM Road Show. Before joining the team I was a bit of a loner and did not enjoy speaking in front of crowds. Having to deliver 30 second science experiments to thousands of k12 students definitely changed that. My presentation skills and confidence were greatly increased. In addition to these skills, I also learned how to tailor my teaching to the students observing. On any given day we could be dealing with kindergarten students in one group, then middle school students in the next. The best part? I still get to be involved and participate as an alum!

Perhaps my favorite teaching experience was the opportunity to work with the students at the Keweenaw Bay Ojibwa Community College Youth STEM Academy. Before this experience I had been doing the quick demos with Mind Trekkers. The youth academy provided me with the opportunity to work closely with a group of students on a daily basis on a larger engineering project. My most memorable project was the Mad Hatter's Camp. NSBE PCI
NSBE Pre-College Initiative
(March 2014 | March 2015)

For the 2013-2014 school year I had the honor to serve as the Pre-College Initiative (PCI) chair for the Michigan Tech Chapter of the National Society of Black Engineers. As PCI Chair, I worked with the Detroit Public Schools System's Office of Science to organize the trip using a previously designed program. The next year, 2015, I served as president for the organization. This time I had the opportunity to work with the Foundation for Family Science and the Office of Science to redesign the program to include other examples of engineering in industries that students may not have been aware of, such as sports, entertainment, and fashion. This experience inspired my current research and employment interests.
